Your Cry Will be a Whisper (1993) is in three movements. The opening
movement begins with a light and delicate introduction, which gives way to a
middle section of increasing momentum, followed by a return to the atmospheric
opening. The second movement is bumptious in nature, bright and always moving.
It is rondo-like, with a recurring section that repeatedly marks the progress of
the movement. There are also contrasting sections of a more delicate nature. The
final movement, which is slow and ruminative, begins and ends with the sounds of
bells tolling, and is elegiac in character.
The title for the work comes from the sayings of a well known Hasidic master,
refering to moments of prayer. Perhaps this spirit is also found in this piece.
Your Cry Will be a Whisper was commissioned by Benjamin Verdery with funding
provided by the National Endowment for the Arts.

H. Pinto, Sao Paulo, Brazil:
The highlight was Daniel Asia’s ‘Your Cry Will Be a Whisper’, a new addition to the guitar recital repertoire. (Your Cry Will Be a Whisper) is written in a contemporary idiom and the elaborate guitar writing is rare for a composer who is not a guitarist.
